Congratulations on your decision to buy a personal or business notebook computer! When choosing a laptop computer, you will need to make some important decisions. Below are some tips to consider when purchasing a new or used notebook computer.
Choosing Your Notebook Computer
When choosing your personal notebook or laptop computer, it is important to determine what you will be using your laptop pc for. While laptops are often used to allow for mobility, some people choose to replace their desktop computes with a laptop because it takes up less space. Some refrain from this because they want a large monitor. If you decide to replace your desktop computer with a notebook, you can plug in a desktop monitor to display information from your notebook.
When buying a notebook computer, you must think about many of the same considerations you would when buying a desktop computer. Whether you are buying a personal or business laptop computer you will want to consider the following:
Type of Notebook
: Some people choose business notebooks while others go for stylish notebooks. Other types of laptop computers include tablet PCs, gaming notebooks, vista notebooks, and thin notebooks. There are also ultra-mobile PCs.
Computer Processor: The computer processor determines the speed of your computer. The more complex programs your computer runs, the higher the speed needed and the more powerful processor.
Hard Drive: Your computer hard drive determines how much space you have on your computer for storage of computer software and files. Some people choose to have more than one hard drive or even purchase an external hard drive. Hard Drive Space is measured in GB(gigabytes) or TB(trigabytes).
RAM- RAM stands for Random Access Memory and it is what powers your software and computer usage. If you look at the packaging for your computer software, you will notice the amount of RAM it uses in its system requirements list. Ram is measured in MB (megabytes), GB (Gigabytes) and TB (Trigabytes)
USB Ports- Most computer accessories and peripherals such as scanners, keyboard, printers, cameras, etc connect to a computer via a USB cable. So, you will want to make sure your notebook computer has enough USB ports (places to plug in the USB cable). You will need to think about how many items you plan to plug into your computer.
CD Rom or DVD Rom: Most computer programs that you will use will come on a CD or DVD. Most media today (movies, music, games) that you want to use your computer with will come on one of these discs which means your computer will need a CD or DVD Rom. Below are some explanations on types of Rom Drives.
CD-R - A CD-writer or recorder (or simply CD-R drive) is used to write data on CD-R disks. Usually, a CD-writer can read information from CD as well as write information on CD, The locally produced CD-R disks are created with CD writer. The speed of these drives is up to 52X or more.
CD-RW - It can write data on both CD-R and CD-RW discs and also read data from them. You must have a CD-RW disc to re-write with the CD-RW drive. These drives have read and write speed is up to 52X or more but the re-write speed is 10X or more. The CD-RW drive is advanced and more expensive than CD-R drive.
DVD - DVD stands for Digital Video Disk Versatile Disc. DVD-ROM will allow DVD's to be read by your computer. A DVD Writer will allow you to write information to a DVD. A DVD ROM is an extremely high capacity optical disc with storage capacity from 4.7 GB to 17 GB.
